I have a largish number of big and complex PDF documents (1000+ pages & 20MB to 40MB each containing multi-column text, B&W diagrams and equations etc).
They all show up fine on my Kindle Fire HD - the pdf formatting is perfect, legible and needs no adjustment at all.
The only problem is that ALL these documents have the same generic pdf icon on the Kindle carousel and I find it difficult to choose the one I want. I have cover images set as the first page of the PDF.
I have read that I need to convert these to .mobi or .azw3 to get the cover art in place (which I have tried and does work) but this completely wrecks the formatting so that the books are totally unreadable. I am sure it would work fine for a novel but not a technical manual. I have tried to use calibre to convert from pdf to pdf - but this doesn't work either. My 1000 page document is now 10000 pages and the page sequence is messed up. I realise that pdf conversion for this type of document is highly problematic. Each conversion takes an hour or so and I have tried setting a variety of options but after spending several hours on this I am no further forward - either I have pdfs which I can read but are difficult to identify on the carousel or have documents that are easy to identify but sadly, impossible to read.
This can't be that unusual a request - is there a foolproof and reliable way of getting a pdf with a cover image to show up without too much fiddling on the Kindle Fire HD carousel?
