Mr Skeffington was Elizabeth's last book, written in Switzerland and France shortly before the outbreak of WW 2, and published in 1940 in the USA and the UK. It is a complex, paradoxical, and sardonic story in which the main character, Lady Frances Skeffington, was exceptionally beautiful when young, had lost much of her beauty after a severe illness, and knew her 50th birthday was coming soon.
