Henry Handel Richardson was the nom de plume of Ethel Florence Lindesay Robertson, nee Richardson (born January, 1870, Australia, died March 1946, England). She had one sister, born in 1871. In 1888 she left Australia and spent the rest of her life in Germany and England, making only one brief visit to Australia in 1912.
The Getting of Wisdom was her second and favourite novel, first published in 1910. It is an account of a young girl's life in her family and at boarding school, and was highly regarded by H. G. Wells.
