Edward Dyson (1865-1931) was an Australian writer who flourished in the great days of newspaper fiction. Instead of pulp fiction magazines, the thousands of small local newspapers filled gaps with short stories and serials, while city papers often ran two or three short stories, because actual bookstores existed only in the big cities, while newspapers were available absolutely everywhere.
Dyson was immensely prolific, so prolific he used many pseudonyms, of which Dy Edwardson, Ward Edson, and Silas Snell were the most prominent.
In this collection we meet "The Odd Man Out", Daniel Emanuel Ash, a genial gentlemanly tramp, an opportunist whose gentle grafting was told in 28 short stories in the Melbourne weekly paper "Punch" between 3rd March and 13th October 1910. These amusing tales are gathered here and published together as a collection for the first time, in chronological order of first publication.
The first two stories were as by "Billy T.", one of Edward Dyson's many pseudonyms. The rest were under the by-line "Ward Edson". For some production reason, two of the stories were published without a title, so I made titles up for them. These two cases are noted in the text.
