Herbert George Wells ( Sep. 21, 1866 Aug. 13, 1946) is often called the father of science fiction, and is known for his influential novels like The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, exploring themes of futurism, social commentary, and scientific advancement, and he is credited with envisioning or predicting concepts such as time travel, alien invasions, and even the internet.
Some of his early novels, called scientific romances, invented several themes now classic in science fiction in such works as The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, When the Sleeper Wakes, and The First Men in the Moon. The Sea Lady was serialized from July to December 1901 in Pearsons Magazine before being published as a volume by Methuen in 1902. This ebook includes several examples of early book covers. Sadly, due to copyright restrictions, the 25 illustrations by Lewis Baumer (18701963) have been omitted.
