Alternative medicines - what do people think?

No right, wrong or definitive answers, just what do people think?

I have always come down on the side of science/ modern pharmaceutical medicine, but my opinion has been changing for a few years, and more rapidly in recent months. Here in the UK we have the NHS, free to access at point of service, but which we pay for in our taxes.

In the past I have had very mixed service from them, when I was born they found out quite early I was extremely allergic to Penicillin, fast forward to my late teens and I needed antibiotics, the doctor prescribed Amoxicillin even though my notes clearly stated I was allergic to Penicillin, I ended up in hospital with a luckily not too severe reaction (extremely high temperature, hallucinating and sickness) - not great.

A few years later I had a serious motorbike accident and I received fantastic care, they thought at one point I would definitely loose one leg and have lasting sever damage to the other, they saved both and even though I have metal work in both legs I can still walk fine and do a physical job with very little pain. Although they did make a mistake where one of the screws in the metal work was too long and was causing problems, they wouldn't admit this mistake and I only found it out when I went to a private surgeon to get to the cause of the pain/ instability I was suffering.

My father is now suffering from sever knee pain (age and arthritis) and they refuse to help him, they just gave him paracetamols. A family member who has had to have life saving medicine every day for over 20 years was taken into hospital a few weeks ago, the hospital didn't give them their medicine or any food or water, they died within two days.

All of this has led me to look at alternative/ herbal medicines - something I thought I would never do! (mainly for my father to try and ease the pain in his knee/ help the movement of the joint) Doing some research/ reading I found out about Arnica oil for joint pain, I bought some for my father and he's been applying it for a day and already the knee is less painful and movement is easier (still nowhere near perfect but better), this has made me seriously reconsider the role alternative/ herbal medicines may play in my future.

Has anybody else ever tried herbal/ alternative remedies? I know online opinions are divided, with some people swearing by them and others ridiculing them and as I said my opinion has changed and I'm not so sure now that Science has as many of the answers as it would lead you to believe.

All opinions welcomed, but lets respect others beliefs/ experiences :)
