This story is based on dissociative identity or "multiple personalities." It is one of the first books to be themed based on the multiple personalities condition.

Gelett Burgess, 1866-1951, was a San Francisco artist, editor, poet, and author. Among his many interests was "nonsense verse", of which his best known is:

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one!

Years later he wrote a rueful sequel:

Ah, yes, I wrote the "Purple Cow"—
I'm Sorry, now, I wrote it;
But I can tell you Anyhow
I'll Kill you if you Quote it!
