Auto adding books merge problem

I have my calibre set to auto add from a certain folder. Every time calibre starts it adds the books but does not merge them. So I have to go to find duplicates then merge each set which is very time consuming :help:. Under adding books adding actions I do have it set to merge duplicates. What am I doing wrong?
