One of a loosely-linked trio of books about a lost civilization in South America, featuring the mysterious giant Monella. These are: the prequel, A Queen of Atlantis (1898); The Devil-tree of El Dorado (1896); and King of the Dead (1903).
Don Lorenzo approaches Arnold Neville to lead an expedition into the South American interior. When Neville refuses, Lorenzo kidnaps Nevilles fiancée and her mother, challenging him to follow. Arnold and his friend, Gordon Leslie, take up the chase. They encounter a scientist and his daughter: Manzoni, as he is called, is the exiled king of the city where Lorenzo (called Lyostrah) now rules. All the while, weird events are occurring: Ogres from a huge fortress in the center of the land are killing and eating people in the night; Alloyah, the arch-priestess, is using her power to raise the dead. Will Manzoni prevail and be restored as the rightful heir to the throne?
