A young artist, wandering into the country in search of “material” for his sketches, is detained by accident in a farm-house on the Marsh Island. He nearly falls in love with Doris Owen, the farmer’s beautiful daughter. She already has a lover in Dan Lester, a young man of the neighborhood, whom she has always vaguely expected to marry; but Dick Dale’s culture and trained artistic mind, coming to her like a revelation from another world, almost win away her affection.
(—Contemporary review, 1885)
