The Final Quest by Richard Monaco (ISFDB) is the 3rd novel in his Parsival Saga series of Arthurian historical fantasy centred around the eponymous Knight of the Round Table (Wikipedia), this installment dividing the war-weary hero's attention between searching for his lost wife and son in between preventing demons from gaining the Holy Grail, free courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint, who are e-printing it from its 1980 Putnam edition.
The full blurb for this says that it, as well as the 1st novel, were both shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, back in the day. Apparently the original quartet was later expanded with a fifth book in recent years.
Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)
And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.
Because not only are sfnal freebies always welcome, this happens to be one that I already own the 1st-in-series of (but have not yet gotten around to reading), thanks to a long-ago Fictionwise sale back when it was still being offered by e-Reads before their acquisition by Open Road (who incidentally still hold the rights to #1, although Endeavour has picked up the rest). Though I thought it looked very interesting at the time, I had no idea that there was more than just the one standalone novel (since apparently the others had not made their way to ebook format yet, nor had the rest of the author's other backlist, and ISFDB wasn't as fully filled-out back then as it is now).
So finding out that there's more to read if I like the first one, and for free in the case of this third part, makes this a doubleplus good day! :yahoo:
Enjoy! (And Happy Independence Day to my neighbours to the south, and any other members worldwide who celebrate it as well. :celebrate:)
Description
Medieval England has been left in ruins, plague-ridden and war-weary.
Now, Sir Parsival must embark on his final quest … to search for his lost wife, Layla, and son, Lohengrin.
But death and fantasy prey hand in hand in the once-enchanted kingdom.
Amid this bleak, dangerous and plague-ridden landscape, the evil and demonic Clinschor continues to search for the Holy Grail, whilst Parsival also embarks on a quest to find his long lost family.
Through all this, Broaditch of Nigh and his family must also traverse through the war and plague-ridden tatters of medieval, Arthurian England.
Will Parsival finally complete his quest in search of the Grail?
Richard Monaco’s intensely gripping novel, The Final Quest is the third installment to his Parsival series. The Final Quest was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, as was Monaco’s first novel in the series, Parsival, or a Knight’s Tale.
