Old kindle - can't reset to factory settings?

Hi everyone - this is my first post. :) I apologize if this has been asked before. I have an old kindle (running version 4.1.3) - I took it on a trip and since I've taken it off airplane mode it will no longer connect to wifi. I tried all the google stuff, I've done a soft reset a few times but it doesn't work, so I (took a deep breath) and tried to reset to factory settings. I understand how to do it, and I'm clicking the right things ... settings then menu then Reset to factory defaults, and I click OK - but then nothing happens. I can just go back to reading a book as if I hadn't just tried to reset it (but I still can't connect to wifi). (When I go to Wi-Fi networks and click view, nothing happens.) Has anyone seen this before? Any tips? Thanks so much!!
