Privileged Lives by Edward Stewart is the 1st novel in his Vince Cardozo Mysteries series of mystery/crime thrillers, this one set amongst high society and exposing the depravity of the well-to-do as the eponymous detective investigates a murder seemingly tied into the re-awakening of an heiress from a coma, free courtesy of publisher Open Road Media, who are e-printing it from its 1988 hardcover edition originally out from Delacorte Press.

The blurb describes this series as police procedural, which may be true for the others, but I'd actually argue against that categorization for this particular installment, since this I've actually read this one a long time ago. My mom had an old copy of it and it was one of the earliest mainstream "bestseller" novels I've ever tried (still don't have all that many in my reading diet) and what I recall of it is pretty heavy on the sensationalism and "shocking" sex value compared to the more genre-typical police procedurals I've read, making it more of a high society Hollywood blockbuster-style crime thriller in this instance, IMHO. YMMV.

Currently free, probably just for one day as ORM seem to be offering this in lieu of their regular public domain daily freebie today @ B&N, Amazon, Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (none available to Canadians, since we don't get offered Open Road deals, much less freebies, any more)

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because not only is it kind of weirdly nostalgic to have a non-sfnal book I've actually previously read show up, it's also a nice surprise indeed to see that Open Road is still occasionally offering us some non-PD freebies from their growing backlist catalogue. :2thumbsup

(Even if they're no longer offering them outside the States, a marketing decision which I personally think is undercutting their potential additional sales from the international market, which also likes to re-read their nostalgic backlist books.)

Enjoy!

Description
In this classic thriller, bestselling author Edward Stewart weaves a complex tale of sex, money, and murder

In a private suite at a New York hospital, Beatrice “Babe” Vanderwalk Devens awakens from a seven-year coma. The socialite and fashion designer is stunned to learn that her husband, Scottie, was brought to trial twice—and acquitted—for her attempted murder.

Across town, the naked, mutilated body of a young man wearing a black leather bondage mask is found in an empty apartment in the Beaux Arts Tower, high atop the Museum of Modern Art. Seven miles away, off-duty NYPD lieutenant Vince Cardozo is relaxing on a Brooklyn beach with his twelve-year-old daughter when he gets the call.

Cardozo’s investigation into the savage murder of the Beaux Arts John Doe takes him into the exclusive lairs of Manhattan’s elite. Babe Devens is part of that world. When Cardozo uncovers a shocking connection between the two cases, it could topple more than just high society.

A Book-of-the-Month-Club featured selection.
