Dares Gift tells of a house haunted by the spirit of treachery, which corrupts its inhabitants. In The Past, Vanderbridges first wife returns to haunt him and his second wife. In Whispering Leaves, Mammy Rhody returns to protect little Pell from harm.

Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow (April 22, 1873 November 21, 1945) was an American novelist. A lifelong Virginian, Glasgow portrayed the changing world of the contemporary South. During more than four decades of literary work, she published 20 novels (five reaching best-seller lists), one book of short stories, a collection of poems, and a book of literary criticism.
In 1941 Glasgow published In This Our Life, which won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1942. It was adapted as a movie in 1942.
